Winter Olympics 2018 medal count: Yun Sung-bin wins first South Korean gold in skeleton

The host country was center stage in Pyeongchang on Thursday night, with Yun Sung-bin of South Korea winning a gold medal to highlight Day 7 of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Sung-bin won the men’s skeleton, giving South Korea its second gold of these games and its first Winter Olympics medal ever in a non-skating event.

Dom Parsons captured the bronze medal in the skeleton, giving Great Britain its first medal of the 2018 Games.

Alpine skiing was also on the docket, with Matthias Mayer overcoming a crash in the downhill on Wednesday to capture the gold in men’s super-G, his second straight Olympic Games with a gold medal.

Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States was unable to defend her women’s slalom gold from 2014, unexpectedly taking fourth place in her second event of these games. Frida Hansdotter took the gold, the fourth for Sweden in these games.

American Lindsey Jacobellis led for much of the women’s snowboard cross final but finished in fourth place in her fourth Olympics, just three-hundredths of a second out of a medal. Michela Moioli won the snowboard cross to give Italy its second gold medal of the Games.

Kjetil Jansrud finished third in the super-G for the bronze, giving Norway its 18th medal of these games to lead all countries. Germany continues to lead with nine golds and 15 total medals.

The United States has five golds, one silver and two bronze medals so far in Pyeongchang.
