Temporary I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps open in Augusta Sunday morning, as crews from MaineDOT work to replace a damaged overpass at the Exit 109A interchange over the highway.

The new access points to Whitten Road will be used by all traffic taking the turnpike south of Augusta and for drivers taking the turnpike east toward downtown Augusta or the Capital Area.

Officals say the southbound traffic pattern on Whitten Road will remain the same, but there will be a new stop sign for northbound traffic at the intersection of Whitten Road and the temporary southbound on-ramp.

Exit 109B will remain open for traffic going toward Manchester and Winthrop.

MaineDOT officials say motorists should allow extra travel time or consider using alternate routes.

The new bridge is expected to open later this winter.
