VIENTIANE, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The Vehicle and Driving Management Unit under the supervision of Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department said the number of registered vehicles in the Lao capital, as of June 2017, was over 800,000.

These include 564,788 motorcycles, 3,046 three-wheeled vehicles, 55,819 sedans, 113,048 pick-up trucks, 24,828 SUVs, 29,896 vans, 31,202 heavy trucks and 1,930 buses. The figures were released following the establishment of Vientiane People's Road Maintenance Fund, reported Lao state-run news agency KPL on Tuesday.

The fund, which will be put into trial operation between 2018 and 2020, has been approved recently by the Vientiane Capital People's Council. The inspections are required every year, with the exception of brand new vehicles for the first two years.

The fees for vehicle categories include one million Lao kip (over 121 U.S. dollars) for heavy trucks with 18 wheels, 800,000 Lao kip (over 97 U.S. dollars) for heavy trucks with 12 wheels and sedans and SUVs with engines over 3,000 cc, 500,000 Lao kip (nearly 61 U.S. dollars) for heavy trucks with eight wheels and buses with 45 seats and sedans, pick-up trucks and buses with engines lower than 2,999 cc, 120,000 Lao kip (nearly 15 U.S. dollars) for 110 cc motorbikes, among others.

All diplomatic corps' and other international organizations' vehicles will be exempted, according to the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department.

According to Vientiane authorities, if the number of registered vehicles is multiplied by the toll fee charged on the smallest engine displacement of each vehicle category, the city will have at least 160 billion Lao kip (over 19.4 million U.S. dollars) per year. Vientiane authorities said 25 percent of raised funds will be used for settlement of debts for road construction projects in villages and districts in Vientiane, 74 percent will be spent on road maintenance and 1 percent will be deducted for the administration of the fund.
