See wind gusts scatter patio tables, umbrellas at downtown Syracuse eatery (video)

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The rain had just started about 6:20 p.m. Sunday, and the staff at The Fish Friar in downtown Syracuse were trying to pull audio equipment from the outdoor patio under an awning.

Then the wind hit. Strong gusts scattered the patio furniture, pushing one table into the adjoining Key Bank parking lot and blowing away a pair of yellow-and-white striped table umbrellas.

"It was pretty wild," said restaurant manager Derek Spanfelner. "One of our umbrellas ended up a block over, by Warren Street, which was pretty amazing."

The restaurant is in the former L'Adour Restaurant site, just east of Hanover Square.

Spanfelner wasn't there Sunday, and just saw the video today. He shared it with Syracuse.com.

After the rain started at the restaurant, he said, diners hurried inside and the staff scrambled to protect the amplifier and other equipment being used by a performer.

The wind blew in suddenly. Gusts of 33 mph were recorded about that time at Hancock International Airport, and more than a quarter-inch of rain fell in an hour.

"Luckily, no one got hurt, and there wasn't much damage to any of the tables," Spanfelner said.
