Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Maritime and Pollution Prevention teams have removed 80kg of clumpy oiled flotsam/jetsam and sea grass from the Port of Tauranga.

A regional council spokesperson says their teams responded immediately after POT reported spotting debris in the water within the vicinity of Berth 10 earlier today.

'A visual inspection of shorelines around Ferguson Park and Pilot Bay were also undertaken to ensure debris had not been carried outside the port area. No further debris was evident.”

The Council has now commenced an investigation to ascertain the source of this debris.

'As people are out enjoying the Harbour this weekend, it is a timely reminder to ensure that when debris is sighted, it is reported to the Regional Council's Pollution Prevention Hotline.”

To report debris or pollution call the Bay of Plenty Regional Council on 0800 884 883 or email info@boprc.govt.nz
