AHMEDABAD: A youth tried to help a peon working in his office to fulfil his dream of getting rich and ended up losing Rs 1 lakh. The duo was promised Saudi riyals at half the prevailing exchange price by two conmen who cheated the victims of Rs 1.35 lakh and handed them a package containing bars of soap.
According to Paldi police, Kuldeep Omprakash, 25, a resident of Isanpur, works at an IT firm in Naranpura as a team leader.
On June 26, his peon, Bharat Parmar, a resident of Shahpur, sought his help to find a money changing firm as he had 50 Saudi riyals with him. Kuldeep found him a firm and Parmar got Rs 850 from it at the exchange rate of Rs 17 per riyal.
"On the same day, Parmar approached Kuldeep again, and told him that a person had met him and offered 1,400 notes of 50 riyals, amounting to Rs 12 lakh, at half the exchange rate," said a Paldi police official. "Parmar asked Kuldeep to accompany him to identify the currency."
Two persons, who identified themselves as Yusuf and Rehman, met Kuldeep and Parmar near Anjali Crossroads and showed them some genuine currency notes. Yusuf claimed that he had got the 14 bundles from a pillow cover of his former employee in Mumbai and wanted to get money. They offered the duo the currency for Rs 5 lakh.
"Kuldeep refused to buy the story when they told them that they can pay Rs 1 lakh upfront and pay the remainder after the exchange," said an investigator. "Two days later, Parmar prodded Kuldeep to get money. Kuldeep got Rs 1 lakh and Parmar got Rs 35,000 which they handed over to the duo near Bhattha area. Yusuf and Rehman did not allow them to look into the package citing safety and left. When Kuldeep and Parmar opened the cloth package, they found soap bars wrapped in newspaper pieces."
Police officials said that they have not found CCTV footage but they are questioning Parmar to get more information about who lured him into the trap.
