As France recovers from the worst floods in decades, a photographer has captured at how it compares to the 1910 Great Flood.

In Paris, the water levels after the Seine River burst its banks have been described as the worst since the Great Flood of Paris in 1910.

Art director and blogger Julien Knez from Golem 13 travelled around the streets of the French capital with iconic photos from more than a century ago, when water levels rose eight metres above the ordinary level.

“The Seine, which reached its peak at 6.10 metres in Paris around 2 am Saturday, [before it] began a slight decline,” he explained.

“Here are some pictures before and after that I made …”

France has announced an emergency fund to help those who lost everything after the flooding in Paris.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls said after a government meeting that the "return to normality will take time" and "solidarity is called for".

He said the fund will be credited with "several tens of thousands euros" to provide quick help to people with no resources.

The Seine's water levels peaked Saturday in the French capital but still remain 3.7 metres (more than 12 feet) above normal.

Some areas west and south of Paris were still under flood watch along the Seine and one of its tributaries, the Essonne River.

About 7,000 French homes remained without electricity and the Louvre and the Orsay museums in Paris were forced to close.

Several train stations and roads are still closed in the French capital due to flooding and emergency crews were pumping water out of a key highway interchange.
