Portugal’s final place in Group F

First

Second

Third

Fourth (out)

The chart above details nearly all the ways group play could end for Portugal. Each cell in the chart above represents the outcome of two games. Green cells mean that Portugal will advance to the next round of the tournament. Yellow cells indicate a third-place finish, which, for four of the six teams, will be enough to advance. Pink cells are bad news: they represent outcomes that eliminate Portugal.

If Portugal beats Hungary, it will win the group if Austria wins or ties its game against Iceland. If Iceland wins, Portugal could come in second, depending on the goal differential.

If Portugal ties Hungary, it can do no worse than third place, which, given its goal differential, would be enough to advance to the Round of 16. It’s complicated; consult the chart. Bottom line: a tie is enough to advance.

If Portugal loses to Hungary, it is eliminated.
