Off-duty police officers pay their respects with a salute during the funeral procession for State Police First Sgt. Joseph G. Portaro, who was laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery Friday. A motorcade of several hundred police cars escorted Portaro’s hearse from Morgantown to the cemetery in Clarksburg. State Police were joined by officers from other law enforcement agencies across the country during the procession. Portaro was born in Clarksburg on July 9, 1965, graduated from Liberty High School, earned several degrees and served with the Army National Guard. He passed away Monday while working at the West Virginia State Police Academy as assistant director of training.

CLARKSBURG — First Sgt. Joseph G. Portaro of the West Virginia State Police was laid to rest Friday in Holy Cross Cemetery.
A motorcade of several hundred police cars escorted Portaro's hearse from Morgantown to the cemetery in Clarksburg. State Police were joined by officers from other law-enforcement agencies across the country during the procession.
Portaro was born in Clarksburg on July 9, 1965, graduated from Liberty High School, received several degrees and served with the Army National Guard. He passed away Monday, March 14, 2016, while working at the West Virginia State Police Academy as the assistant director of training.
