Presidential Primary talk: Author Geoffrey Cowan will talk about "Let the People Rule: Theodore Roosevelt and the Birth of the Presidential Primary" at a book-signing Sun., Feb. 7, at the Portsmouth Athenaeum. Cowan explores Roosevelt's achievements in his new book including how Roosevelt “popularized presidential primaries and increased the number of states that embraced them. A Call for Storytellers: Portsmouth Community Radio’s "True Tales" is looking for storytellers for True Tales Radio, heard every last Tuesday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. on Portsmouth Community Radio, WSCA-LP 106.1FM. Broadcast live and before an in studio audience, local non-professional storytellers tell a true 10-minute story related to a monthly theme. No judging or rating. Rockin’ Murder Mystery: The Governor’s Inn presents “Roch of Ages: The Mystery of the Musical Murder Mystery” beginning Feb. 5 and runs for four weekends. Because of the Women Play: Feb. 5 to 7, Pontaine Theatre, Portsmouth. Presents NYC-based performance artist, Tom Cayler, in his original production, Because of the Women: The Histories of Herodotus (just the high points). Herodotus (485-420BC) was the father of Western history. In an age when drama and heroic poetry ruled the literary marketplace, he was one of the first practitioners of narrative nonfiction. UNH Celebrity Series: A Moon for the Misbegotten, 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 10, in the Paul Creative Arts Center’s Johnson Theatre, Durham. The Desperate Hours: Feb.19 to March 6 at the West End Theater, 959 Islington Street, Portsmouth. A new comedy by George Hosker-Bouley is a play within a play. It is opening night of “The Desperate Hour” and tensions and egos are high as the cast gathers backstage. Camp ENCORE!:: Prescott Park’s Art Festival has opened registration for two exciting sessions of Camp ENCORE! in partnership with Camp CenterStage. NHTP Workshops: New Hampshire Theatre Project is offering a variety of workshops for adult professional development this winter, as well as youth acting intensives. On Mondays from 7 to 9:30 p.m, Jan. 25 through March 7, NHTP company members and guest artists will offer a variety of workshops including storytelling and improvisation, broadening performance skills by studying Chekhov or Lessac techniques; perfect monologues for auditioning, learning voiceover techniques and acting for the camera. Workshop fees are $40 each, or $30 if you sign up for four or more classes. Financial assistance applications are available. A Cappella Quartet: The First Congregational Church of Hampton Concert Series continues on Feb. 6, 7:00 p.m., with the Sugarbeats. Words and Music for the Senses: 7 p.m., Feb. 9, at the Durham Public Library features poetry reading and a performance by the a cappella group N.H. Notables. Poet Abigail Carroll will begin followed by professors and students from the UNH English Department. Carroll is a native of Durham who lives in Vermont. Intermission with light refreshments. LiveARTS!: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, UNH’s is hosting LiveARTS!, a program for musical arts. A surprising medley of university talent from solo student artists, trios or other music groups will perform in an “open mic” coffee house format. The event is free and open to the public. In conjunction, two new exhibitions will be on view “Groundswell” and “Natural Wonder”. University student musicians interested in performing may sign up in advance, through sign-up sheets in the music department and in the Museum of Art, Paul Creative Arts Center, via Facebook and email. If the schedule allows, walk –in sign-ups may take place. Performances will be approximately 10-15 minutes in length. The event will ideally appeal to brass and woodwind chamber quintets and quartets, any instrumental duet or trio, or any soloist with piano accompaniment.

Insightful! will be on view Feb. 2 to March 9 and display highly tactile, high contrast work from the League of N.H. Craftsmen and the N.H. Association for the Blind. Sighted and visually impaired visitors are especially encouraged to interact with the work through touch (Braille text will be provided). Charles Woodbury Talk: Tuesday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m., Contemporary artist and art writer Christopher Volpe will present a talk and slideshow at the York Public Library entitled “The Seeing of the Thing: The Art and Teaching of Charles Woodbury.” The York Public Library will be showing the art works of Charles Woodbury through March. The York Public Library is located at 15 Long Sands Road in York and is open on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 to 7, on Fridays from 10 to 5, and on Saturdays from 10 to 2.

Tarbell Lecture: Thursday, March 17, 5:30 p.m., Laurene Buckley will speak on the Portsmouth Historical Society’s Illuminating Tarbell exhibit as part of a series of lectures expanding upon the exhibition’s focus on the life and works of Edmund Tarbell and the local character of his work. Following the lecture, the gallery will remain open for extended hours. Renowned American Impressionist painter Edmund C. Tarbell is featured in a two part exhibition – a retrospective of his work done here on the seacoast, and a legacy show of those painting in the Tarbell style today. The exhibit is on view from Friday, March 4 – Friday, June 3, 2016, At Discover Portsmouth, 10 Middle Street, Portsmouth. Free and open to the public.
