The spirit of giving and helping thousands of valley residents was in effect after the Convoy of Hope rolled into Las Vegas. The organization provided one-million dollars in food and clothing including health services.

Convoy of Hope organizers prepared to help as many as 10,000 at the Champion Center of Las Vegas. Last year, the organization helped more than 7,500 people as volunteers plan to keep the event growing.

Many families came out to the event and were treated to a Thanksgiving meal along with free shoes for kids and adults. Many attendees also received a haircut for a fresh new look in time for the holidays.

With more than 2,000 volunteers wanting to give back to the community, there was no shortage of good deeds. Organizers say they also helped people looking for work because they want to leave a lasting impression even after people head home.

“We want to make sure that we’re not just giving a hand out but a hand up so making sure what we are doing is going to benefit them in the long term,” Molly Erickson of Convoy of Hope said. “People need that immediate help like with groceries and things like that but also just something that goes beyond just today.”

Over at help of Southern Nevada, Junior League volunteers bagged thousands of meals for more than 2,000 families in help’s “Done in a Day” event, which has been going on for 30 years and the food will be given out in time for Thanksgiving.

There’s more assistance on its way for valley residents who may need it.

A number of groups around town are hosting hot Thanksgiving dinners Wednesday and Thursday including the Salvation Army and the Las Vegas Rescue Mission.
