Girls volleyball: Wauconda rallies for win over Mundelein

Kayla Wedl pounded 9 kills, Sara Sexton added 6 kills, 3 solo blocks and 2 aces, and Wauconda's girls volleyball team started its season by rallying past visiting Mundelein 23-25, 25-13, 25-16 Tuesday night.

Wauconda received 5 kills apiece from LeAnne Sakowicz and Hayley Redmann. Sakowicz also had 14 assists and 11 digs. Ashley Anderson notched 10 digs for the Bulldogs, while Jane Sakowicz served 6 aces and notched 7 digs.

Mundelein was led by Amanda Bogseth with 5 kills and 2 blocks. Julia Harbison served 8 of 8, and Katherine East was 6-of-6 serving with 2 aces for the Mustangs.

Libertyville d. New Trier: The Wildcats won for the second time in as many nights, receiving 16 digs from Morgan O'Brien and 6 kills from Hannah Zerwas in a 25-20, 25-14 victory.

Setter Anna Lillydahl added 13 assists and 6 aces for Libertyville (2-0).

Carmel d. Warren: On Monday night, Elizabeth Tworek had 9 kills, as the Corsairs opened their season with a 25-13, 25-19 win.

Allie Wayland and Cate Halverson added 6 and 4 kills, respectively, while Grace Butler dished out 20 assists.

"Our serving kept Warren out of system very often, and our front row took advantage of some overpasses in the second set," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "Butler did a great job spreading the ball around to all our hitters, who capitalized on most of their quality opportunities to score. Defensively, we were solid from the start and got better as the night went on, even though Warren started to find some rhythm of their own. All in all, a great way to start the season."
