An unexploded World War Two bomb that put Wycombe Wanderers' first trip to the new Wembley Stadium in jeopardy has been removed from the scene.

The match - Wanderers' first at the national stadium in 24 years - had been thrown into doubt after the bomb was found by builders working on a site in nearby Empire Way.

Residents were evacuated yesterday afternoon and a 300m cordon was put up around the site while the police and army dealt with the situation.

Within the last hour the device has been removed and is being taken away so it can be detonated in a controlled explosion.

It had been feared the device might have to remain in place for a week for the authorities to deal with - which would have led to the cancellation of Wanderers' League Two play off final against Southend United.
