One should always shop within his or her own budget in order to save for rainy days.

This was an advice given by our Shopper of the Week who also says that it is important to go for quality rather than quantity when shopping.

Fiji Sun chose Navin Kumar, who resides with his mother in Nabua, because of his love for shopping.

With his field of work related to media, communications, public relations and marketing, Navin said he ensures that he finds time to stock up with the groceries every week for his mother.

Originally from the Friendly North, Navin moved to Suva when he came to study at the University of the South Pacific. He has graduated with a Masters in International Relations and Diplomacy and is now currently pursuing a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), also at USP.  Shopping has become a part of his life and it all started when he moved to Suva. In this issue, Navin shares his experience and what he has learnt throughout the years. “I just love shopping,” Navin said. “My shopping is done on a weekly basis. At times I become a little of an impulsive buyer, however, past experiences has taught me how to weigh the pros and cons when shopping.

“With my busy schedule, I mostly do my shopping on weekends or after work in the evenings.”

Budgeting/ Marketing

Navin understands that it is very important to make a budget when you go out shopping.

This way, according to him, you will be able to save money because you will not be over spending on unnecessary items.

Although he shops over the weekend or finds time in the evenings after work, Navin said he would not miss going to the market on Saturday.

And what takes him to the market every Saturday morning? It is not only because of fresh vegetables and fruits, but it is also because of his live for seafood.

Consumer Advice

One should always prioritise drawing a shopping list before going out to shop.

“This way you will just buy what you need and you will not overspend,” Navin said.

He also advised that it is important to shop within our budget so that you can save some money in your bank account for the rainy days. This, he is referring to times of emergencies.

Navin said one should also refrain from being an impulsive shopper and every shopper must ensure to check that the items they are purchasing is worth what they are paying for.

“The first thing I look for before picking up a item from a supermarket shelve is the expiry date,” he said. “I go for quality rather than quantity. I don’t mind spending a little more bucks on quality items.”

Clothes Shopping

Navin likes to stay trendy with whatever is in fashion. And for that reason, he also treats himself to new clothes almost on a weekly basis.

Although, he has a few shops which are his personal favourites when it comes to shop for clothes, Navin said he doesn’t check on other shops when they are on sale.

“I go for quality clothing which can last long. If we buy cheap stuffs, it fades away in a jiffy.”
