Spearfish debate team gets national recognition

SPEARFISH — The speech and debate team at Spearfish High School has earned national recognition.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports that the National Speech and Debate Association has rank the South Dakota team among the top 10 percent of most successful programs in the nation.

The association says the milestone is remarkable because it demonstrates the school is doing an outstanding job at teaching students essential life skills including communication, listening, research, writing and organization.

Bob Speirs is the head coach of the program at Spearfish High. He says he is pleased that the program continues to attract a large number of students.
