Gourds are for decorating

It's not quite time to get out the Christmas decorations. While there's still a little color on the trees, it's good to make the use of late fall gourds.

Over many centuries, gourds have been used as utensils and to make musical instruments. Closer to home, they are mainly used for decoration. Pumpkins and gourds complement each other, local farmers said. Gourds are a specialty item at the Gaver Farm's pumpkin patch in Mount Airy, said Lisa Gaver.
