There were no major incidents during Diwali, prompting gratitude from the Fiji Police Force.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro acknowledged the public for adhering to safety on Diwali holiday.

“We would like to acknowledge the support of members of the public for adhering to our request in adhering to the safety precautionary measures,” Ms Naisoro said.

“There were no major reports of incidents directly linked to the Diwali celebrations which were of concern.”

However, the Police are urging the public to be vigilant on every other day.

“In light of the fact that the festivities will continue throughout the weekend, the same precautionary measures must be adopted at all times,” he said.

The second day of Diwali, however, was heartbreaking for a family in Labasa after their home was destroyed in an early morning fire on Friday between 2-3am.

The National Fire Authority (NFA)  had urged members of the public to ensure that they monitored all equipment likely to cause fire.

The estimated cost of damage for the 44-year-old man from Tabucolo cane access area, in Labasa was about $60,000. Investigation continues.

The fire was not linked to Diwali but was caused by an electrical fault. Despite this, the NFA reiterates the importance of public safety.
