The Last Post was played yesterday at the Fiji Police Force K-9 unit at Nasese, Suva as friends bid final farewell to K-9 Duke.

K-9 Duke was a faithful servant and to the K-9 unit, he was a loyal friend.

Duke’s handler, Richard Kubu, when interviewed yesterday said he had lost his best friend, someone who stood by him during tough times.

He said at all times Duke was enthusiastic about his work and was always ready to catch the bad guy and move on to the next call.

“Duke’s funeral was worthy of a hero,” he said.

Mr Kubu who is now based in Tavua, left for a High Court case in Labasa last week.

“I left Duke with the K-9 Unit at Lautoka.”

Mr Kubu who had been with Duke for two years, said Duke just went out of the K-9 Unit and was mowed down by a truck.

He said he could not believe that his best friend had died when he was told the news in Labasa.

Mr Kubu said he had many personal friends but for animals, it was always Duke.

Recalling Duke’s career as a K-9 officer, Mr Kubu said they had together uncovered the $90,000 robbery at Rakiraki and another theft in Nabua, Suva.

He said as Duke’s handler, in all the criminal cases they were assigned to, they had brought perpetrators to justice and it was thanks in a large part to the nose of the highly trained police dog.

K-9 Duke was a top police dog.

When asaked if he woud train another dog, Mr Kubu said he would as it was part of his work but woud ask for some time off as Duke’s untimely death was a big blow to him.

Duke was a cross-breed between a German shepherd and a doberman.
