Winter still holding on.... just

After a wet and windy election weekend, the start of this week continues to be very cold and blustery. "A wet, cold and squally southwesterly is expected to affect many in the North Island today," said MetService Meteorologist Elke Louw. "There are a number of warnings in place for severe gales, as well as a period of heavy snow over the Central Plateau today, but the good news is that conditions do start to improve as we head into Tuesday," Louw went on to say.

Wintry showers are expected for eastern parts of the South Island today, with snow to low levels. "It is definitely going to be a cold wintry day with some sleety showers and snow around, and with the added wind-chill factor there will be a very cold bite in the air," Louw said.

With conditions clearing tonight temperatures are expected to dip into the low single digits over most of New Zealand, but things warm up as we head into the middle of the week. "Tuesday and Wednesday look to be the fairest days this week, although there could still be one or two showers around as the disturbed southwesterly flow slowly weakens," Louw said.

A cold front makes its way up from the south during Thursday, bringing with it rain to the West Coast of the South Island late on Thursday, but the front weakens as it approaches the North Island.
