Long Island Fall Festivals and Street Fairs 2014

As autumn dawns on Long Island, harvest time returns and with it, the annual celebrations culminating in fall festivals from Montauk to Malverne and almost everywhere in between becoming decorated in pumpkins.

The events include festivals dedicated to apples, garlic, pickles—even chestnuts—although most are simply dedicated to all things fall, such as scarecrows, corn husking and jack ‘o lantern making.

In preparation for the fall equinox on Monday, Sept. 22, here are 75 fall fairs on Long Island scheduled through November:

Pickle Festival
Specialty pickles, pickle ornaments and pickle-themed merchandise are among the pickled cucumber-related activities at this 35th annual festival. There will be other kinds of non-pickle-related food as well, including fresh vegetables, jams and baked goods. Plus a corn maze, hayrides and family activities, such as rides on the Lollipop Farm train. Dragon Boat Race Festival
This inaugural event will include local and regional teams coming together to race against each other in a series of heats. Franklin Square Fall Festival
Fall is meant to be celebrated: the dangling, falling golden leaves; the chilly arctic breeze; the pumpkins; the costumes; the homemade pastries, pies and hot, piping apple cider! Come rejoice in the gift that is life. Come share a smile, a joke, a precious hug. Come relish in this special time of year and be jubilant for this most blessed time together! Kite Festival

Lynbrook Expo

Off The Walls
This has got to be one of the most unique fall celebrations you’ve ever had the pleasure of stumbling upon. There will be live Latin dancing. There will be a BMX Stunt Show. Yes, there will be more than 20 (!!) arts vendors offering pretty much anything your big generous heart can hope to find, perfect for several surprise gifts for you-know-know! Fall Harvest and Seafood Festival  
Crab races, free boat rides for kids accompanied by an adult, interactive pirate shows, pony rides, magic shows, carnival games and more. Fresh produce and seafood sales, live music, as well as a variety of merchandise and food vendors. Irish Feis and Festival  
A celebration of Irish culture and history featuring traditional dance and piping competitions, a marketplace, plus Irish language and Gaelic sports workshops. Hofstra University, Intramural Fields, 350 Hofstra Blvd., Hempstead. hofstra.edu $10. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 21.

Long Island Garlic Festival
Garlic is known as one of (if not the) healthiest foods on the planet (avocados are up there, too, btw). Mash up the fresh bulbs, let them sit for a lil before sprinkling them atop all of your meals, or even sloshing them back in a cup of fresh spring water. Your body will thank you, for sure. And damn, does it feel so good. At this uber-healthy, uber-spectacular garlic fest there will be, yes, an abundant amount of food, garlic-inspired food, crafts, live music, an Iron Chef garlic competition and a garlic-eating contest! Smithtown Heritage Fair and Car Show

Bellmore Street Fair and Carnival

Cold Spring Fire Department Antiques Show

Long Island Apple Festival
This traditional harvest festival is celebrating its silver anniversary at Sherwood-Jayne House, an 18th century farmhouse that retains its original apple orchard, where some of the trees are over 100 years old. Events include apple relay races, tug-o-war, apple-head doll making, an Apple Pie Baking Contest and a pie auction. There will also be storytelling, pony rides, traditional music, an old- fashioned hay ride, sheep shearing, face painting and many other events. Williston Day Craft Street Fair

West Islip Country Fair

West Hempstead Street Fair

Cow Harbor Day
There’s a lot of history in Northport, to be sure. The quaint lil fishing village used to be just that, overrun with clammers and fisherman and so many who made their livelihoods from the sea. Jack Kerouac used to live in Northport. Allen Ginsberg apparently tried his hand at raking in some clams, too, when he’d visit his fellow Beat visionary. Cow Harbor Day is a very special day to the locals, and to celebrate, there will be copious amounts of food, rides and games, a parade at noon commemorating when Northport was formerly known as The Great Cow Harbor in the days when cattle would graze on its grassy shores, and of course, a whole lot of fun, fun, fun! Heritage Trust Fall into Fun Carnival
To usher in the fall, you’ll want some really, really fun rides. You’ll want food, of course also, but not just any run-of-the-mill foodstuffs. You’ll want spectacular food, food that you’ll be feasting upon and then dreaming about, long, long after the multi-colored lights glowing from atop the fishbowl ping-pong trailers have gone to bed. And of course, you’ll want games. This annual mega-extravaganza has all of these critical components, and truly, just so much more. C’mon, now. Let’s do this! Heritage Park, Mt. Sinai Road, Mt. East Meadow Fire Department Fall Festival

Valley Stream Community Fest
This annual, one-day celebration of the uniqueness of Valley Stream through its culture,

Mastic Harvest Festival

Wildwood Fall Festival

Festival by the Sea

Septemberfest

Long Island Chestnut Festival
This environmentally focused, fun and educational festival celebrates the reintroduction of the American chestnut tree to North America. Fall Garden and Harvest Festival
This fourth annual event features horticultural displays and demonstrations, kid-friendly activities, food, live music, tours of the dahlia garden, a model train exhibit, local artisan vendors, pumpkin painting and hayrides. Fall Antiques and Collectibles Fair

African-American Heritage Parade and Festival
Food, folks, and fun along with talent showcasing for this second annual event focusing on celebrating and expressing the music of Motown, along with international food courts. The parade will run from N. Main Street and Hollaway Street in Freeport up Nassau Road to Greenwich Street, ending at the festival at Washington Street and Front Street in Hempstead. Port Washington Fall Country Fair
A pie-eating contest, live music, historical demonstrations as well as arts and crafts will usher in autumn at this must-go-to fair! Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society, Sands-Willets House, 336 Port Washington Blvd., Port Washington. cowneck.org Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 27.

Harvest Day Festival
This annual event will have costumed trade and craft people demonstrating decoy carving, beekeeping, blacksmithing, candle making, basketry and many other traditional skills. There will be Civil War re-enactors making camp, shooting rifles and parading—plus an 1850s Whaling Captain wedding. Long Island Fair
Continuing a 172-year tradition, this is one of America’s oldest agricultural festivals and is so big it can’t be contained to one weekend. Contestants can face off in corn-husking and scarecrow building events in addition to guessing the weight of a giant pumpkin. Attractions include a petting zoo, live music and dancing as well as pony, tractor and carnival rides. Fairgoers will also find magic shows, stilt walkers, puppets, juggling, storytelling, Civil War reenactments and other historical demonstrations. Not to mention all the mouthwatering fall fair foods, such as candied apples, pumpkins, organic veggies, fresh-made candy, giant turkey legs and funnel cakes. Long Island Flower and Home Expo
Mums the word at this fall family festival dedicated to gardening, landscaping and all things backyard related. Fall Festival
Watch the 3rd NY Revolutionary Regiment performing maneuvers, learn surgical procedures and remedies of the Colonial era and take a cemetery tour and listen to the history of the family members who reside there. Family Fall and Halloween Festival
Fall is the season for family. Whether it’s heading down to the pumpkin patch with the lil ones, gathering round the campfire with some hot, steaming pumpkin lattes, or just simply enjoying a fresh, piping hot home-baked pumpkin pie, it’s all so tough to beat. Mill Neck Manor Fall Harvest Festival

Fall Arts & Crafts Show

Fall Festival

Montauk Fall Festival
This festival kicks off with their famous clam chowder contest at 11 a.m. on Saturday. It includes crab races, rides, a farmers’ market, live music and incorporates elements of Octoberfest. Graba hot, steaming pumpkin latte or some good old-fashioned piping hot apple cider, stroll out toward the East End and gaze out west over the woods. As the winter rolls in, the leaves turn an absolutely gorgeous red, orange, brown and yellow. And as they cover the ground, creating an equally breathtaking, multi-colored forest blanket, you’ll see more and more of that mysterious radar tower jutting up over the towering branches. Wild. Long Beach Fall Festival
This annual celebration has it all: a pumpkin patch, bounce house, petting zoo, ferris wheel, pony rides, haunted house, hay rides, arts and crafts and a costume contest. Come down for some serious fun, fun, fun! Riverhead Country Fair

Fall Family Fishing Festival
Event includes a casting contest, fly-fishing instruction, pumpkin decorating, pony rides, free bait and fish-cleaning services. Displays by Trout Unlimited, DEC Environmental Education, State Parks as well as other fishing and environmental organizations. Prior to the festival, the New York State parks department will stock South and McDonald Ponds with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. Oyster Festival
Billed as the largest annual outdoor festival and the largest waterfront fest on the East Coast with about 200,000 attendees on average, the 31st oyster fest is back. The lineup includes tall ships, pirate shows and carnival rides. Aside from oysters prepared every way imaginable, it also features the famous oyster schucking contest. How many shucks can a woodchuck shuck if a woodchuck could shuck wood? Sorry. Tried, anyway. Seaford Fall Festival
