Kiwibank profit hits $100 million; after 12 years, it has 860,000 customers

Kiwibank, the state-owned lender, lifted its annual profit 3 percent as it widened net interest margins, and is looking to start paying dividends to its owner in the next three years. Net profit rose to $100 million in the 12 months ended June 30 from $97 million a year earlier, the Wellington-based bank said in a statement.

Kiwi Group Holdings, the New Zealand Post holding company which includes wealth management, insurance and home loans units, lifted profit 7 percent to $107 million.

The bank increased net interest income 6.2 percent to $293 million, widening its net interest margin 5 basis points to 1.86 percent, even as a shift to fixed interest mortgages put pressure on those margins.

The banking unit contributed the bulk of NZ Post’s annual profit and is seen as the state-owned enterprise’s main vehicle for growth in the coming years.

Kiwibank chief executive Paul Brock told a briefing in Wellington the lender is gearing up to making a return on NZ Post’s investment after 12 years of operation.

“We are starting to come into that stage where we’re paying returns,” Brock said, and confirmed the bank will look to pay dividends in the next three years.

The lender is clamping down on costs to help prepare its return on investment to NZ Post, and Brock said that’s expected to strip out about 2 percent in the 2015 financial year.

“We can’t just continue to drive for growth without a return overall,” Brock said.

Kiwibank increased its loan book 11 percent to $14.6 billion and increased customer deposits 5.8 percent to $12.8 billion.

The lender anticipates spending a further $100 million on infrastructure in the coming four years, and NZ Post last year said the bank faced higher capital requirements due to the increased regulatory requirements and a planned upgrade of its banking systems.

The bank’s parent injected $40 million of new equity in the past year, and Kiwibank raised $100 million through a capital note issue earlier this year.

Brock said he expects to fund future capital needs from increased profitability.

Kiwibank’s capital notes, which pay annual interest of 6.61 percent, last traded on the NZX debt market at a yield of 6 percent, while its preference shares, which pay annual interest of 8.15 percent, last traded at $103 per $100 bundle, according to NZX data.

The bulk of the profit was made up by the Kiwibank Banking Group (“Kiwibank”) which achieved an after-tax profit of $100 million, an increase of three per cent over the previous year’s profit of $97 million.

Kiwibank Chief Executive Paul Brock said the underlying performance was very encouraging and emphasised the increasing contribution of the financial services group to the overall performance of the New Zealand Post Group.

Focusing on the bank’s performance, Mr Brock said loans and deposits showed healthy growth with the bank increasing market share in its key markets. There has been solid revenue growth and margin improvement along with investments into a new core banking system, the retail network and digital initiatives which have increased costs. This issue is being addressed with an internal restructure designed to improve both customer service and productivity and reduce costs.

In the last year, Kiwibank:
• Increased loans and advances by 10.6% from $13.2 billion to $14.6 billion
• Increased customer deposits by 5.8% from $12.1 billion to $12.8 billion

Mr Brock said the bank was now at an important stage of its growth. “After only 12 years of trading we have about 860,000 customers in what is a very competitive market. This brings with it special challenges to ensure we maintain profitable growth as well as continuing to provide excellent customer service and that we operate where our customers are – both face to face and in an increasingly digital world. This means we must continually look at how we do business including how we manage our costs. We are meeting this challenge head-on and I look forward to steadily improving results in the coming years.”

Mr Brock said there will be significant new investment in the bank’s infrastructure with approximately $100 million being spent over the next four years upgrading the core banking system.

Significant events during the financial year included the announcement of a new regional office in Hastings creating employment opportunities in that region.

“This project is a key part of our business continuity programme to ensure that there would be no disruption to banking services should there be a sustained service outage in Auckland or Wellington. Refurbishment is well underway and the site is expected to be operational by late November.”

Mr Brock said investor confidence in the bank was reinforced with a successful capital note offer in May. The issue raised $100m and contributed to a total capital ratio of 12.9% at the end of June.
