Hornet attack! Euro Tour golfer jumps into lake after getting stung 20 times

Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal ran into a swarm of hornets during Friday’s second round at the Malaysian Open and was stung 20 times before diving into a water hazard while fully clothed to escape. After receiving treatment, Larrazabal put on new clothes, stuck his approach shot to within 20 feet and drained his birdie putt.

Larrazabal had just hit a shot out of the 5th-hole bunker when he felt something on his nose. He quickly realized they were hornets.

“They were three times the size of bees. They were huge and like 30 or 40 of them started to attack me big time. My caddie told me to run, so I start running like a crazy guy, but the hornets were still there, other players told me to jump in the lake.”

Tournament officials told Larrazabal to relax and gave him injections to deal with the stings. After getting up-and-down for birdie, he proceeded to make the cut. Expect him to play away — far away — from that bunker in rounds three and four.

“It looks like I’ll be playing the weekend, so tomorrow it will be very, very scary to play that hole.”
